To Parents:
As part of their study of personal and public events, we have asked your students to conduct an
interview with a relative. The focus of the interview will be on significant events in your life. After
each interview, your child should use the worksheet provided here to list the events, dates and a
brief explanation as to why they were significant.
If possible, we are also asking students to collect visual artifacts for the timeline and list what they
are and why they were chosen. The artifacts could be family pictures, naturalization papers, college
diplomas, birth certificates, induction papers for the military, etc.

To Students:
When you interview your relatives ask if there are any artifacts that correspond with the events they
described. On the chart below list the artifacts, when they are from and why they were chosen.
Examples might be naturalization papers, birth certificates, photos of a first home or car, a photo of
a baby’s first steps, college diploma, etc.
If you have one available, use a digital camera to photograph the artifact. These photos will be
placed on the historical timeline in class. If you don’t have a digital camera, take a still photograph
of the object and perhaps your teacher can scan the photo into the classroom computers.
